Since I've started travelling for work in 2016, I haven't really bothered with asking colleagues to bring me back items to review since I've been able to keep a pretty steady stream of items in my backlog to review. However a couple weeks ago I had a perfect opportunity to ask one of my colleagues flying in from Europe to pick me up a pie from Abu Dhabi airport (as it's easily accessible on a transfer) as we'd both be meeting in Vietnam the following day, and pies are really one of the safer things for me to be eating after that amount of time outside a fridge anyway.
Since I'd be eating this pie from a hotel room and not my house, it meant I couldn't throw it in the toaster like I have done with other not-so-fresh pies. Being a deep fried pie that meant the outer shell was a bit chewy, but unlike french fries that have been left out, this at least still had a bit of crunch to it, but I'll have to admit wasn't all that good, so I'll try and base my review mostly on the filling as I know I wasn't giving the crust a fair shot.
My photos also don't really show how the filling was split down the centre of the pie. It was a pretty clear 50/50 split horizontally between the custard and the mango filling but vertically it was probably 2/3 Mango syrup and 1/3 custard cream. The custard was actually pretty good being chilled (the pie was in he fridge before I could eat it) and it had a noticeable creaminess that would have been just as good hot. It wasn't as good as the Milk Pie I had in Japan a couple months back, but it wasn't anywhere near as terrible as the Strawberry & Custard Pie I had in Oman. The Mango filling was surprisingly not just simple flavoured syrup and there were actually some pretty large chunks of real mango mixed in. It was sweet, but it offset the oily and stale shell. Like the custard, I think it was pretty good even when served cold and to be completely honest, I'm not too sure if it would have been better hot and might have been better served cold (like Jam on toast).
