McDonald's Singapore Durian Crunch McFlurry Receipt 

In early June I received a booklet of McDonald's vouchers in the post.  These were the same vouchers that were available on the McDonald's Singapore website and they weren't really anything of value, so I didn't think much about them.  Rather than just tossing them into the recycle bin, I decided to keep them for my family who was visiting Singapore in about a week, as they might find them useful when I wasn't out with them.    On the reserve of the coupons they had some standard marketing images, but hidden on the bottom right corner there was a small ad showing the Durian Crunch McFlurry, and stating that it was going to be available starting 17 June.

I immediately told my wife about it, and she thought it sounded disgusting.  We both come from a cold-weather climate country, and durian is pretty foreign for us.  To be honest, the smell of durian doesn't bother me at all, though I do not enjoy the taste unless the fruit has been chilled.  This might because the very first time I tried the fruit, back in 2006,  I had durian on a street corner in Kuala Lumpur.  It was sitting directly in the sun, and therefore it was baked and served HOT, I thought it was pretty terrible...  Since then I've only been able to eat cold durian, though the prospect of a Durian McFlurry still didn't seem all that appetising to me.

17 June was the day we left Singapore to go to Phuket for our wedding, so I didn't really have time to go out into the city and hunt for it.  I still checked out one of the 2 McDonald's at Singapore Changi Airport, but as the McFlurry (like all other promo deserts in Singapore) was only served at the "Dessert Kiosks", which the airport didn't have it available, so I had to wait until our return.  On the 25th we were back in Singapore, and my wife had some friends visiting her, so I thought it was a perfect time for all of us to try it.

I placed the order at the dessert kiosk, whilst the Koreans went to find an open table.  I ordered 2 for the 4 of us, each couple sharing 1.  I took a smell on the walk over to the terrible, and it smelt pretty terrible, unlike any ice cream I've ever had, let alone a McFlurry.  It also didn't look all that great. The durian syrup they used was a orange/yellow, and it looked find drizzled on top, but once it was stirred around a bit, it looked just as bad as it smelt.

We both took our first bite, and you can see how we liked it by just looking at the photos below...

When I took my first bite, I truthfully didn't find it all that gross, but that only lasted about 3-5 seconds before the HORRIBLE aftertaste kicked in. 4 of us tried it, not a single one of us wanted to have a second bite, and most of us (not me) made faces of disgust.  Ice cream usually makes me thirsty, but I just needed something to drink to wash away the sweet, but strong artificial durian aftertaste. We didn't order anything but these McFlurries, so we didn't have anything else to eat. My wife doesn't like to waste money, and if we don't like something we order, we still usually try to finish what we buy, rather than just going and buying something else, but this time, she insisted I go out and buy some iced bubble tea for her to drink.  Sadly, McDonald's in Singapore doesn't have bubble tea like China did, so I had to leave them and go find something for her to drink.  Like everything in Singapore, it took forever to order, so it took me a good 15 minutes waiting for 3 cups of tea, by the time I came back, both McFlurries were exactly like I left them.  After having a drink in hand, I tried a second bite, but since the ice cream had melted together with the syrup, it tasted even stronger, and even less appetising.
